As many successful Internet marketers can attest to, article marketing is perhaps the best way to generate traffic to your website. If you’re serious about making money online then you had better include article marketing as part of your advertising strategy. However, in order for it to work you need to apply the following article marketing tips:
1. Longer Articles Isn’t Better!
Irrespective of what you may have heard, articles should ideally be relatively short with the word count being 300 to 500 words. Bear in mind that when the average person reads through a article they simply skim over it and take in the most important points. If your article is too long, it’s very unlikely that anyone will read it from beginning to end. Also, you should try to ensure that each paragraph only has three or four sentences.
Furthermore, you need not be a skilled writer in order to write articles, but instead, you should simply write them as if you were speaking to someone.
2. Create Multiple Articles
You simply cannot expect to make a huge amount of money if you’re only willing to write one or two articles each month. Instead, you need to create numerous articles relative to the niche you’re involved with. Ideally, you should aim to write approximately 20 to 30 articles each month, and they should of course all be targeted on certain keywords. By writing numerous articles each month you’ll be giving off the impression that you’re an expert in your field.
3. Maintain Quality
You need to realize that even if you’re write 100 articles each month, nobody will want to waste their time reading them if they are all of a poor quality. Basically, good quality articles should contain useful information such as techniques and tips which people in turn can use. In fact, when someone focuses primarily on quantity rather than quality, the concept is known as bum marketing.
4. Submit to Multiple Directories
Irrespective of what you may have heard with regards to submitting articles to one directory, the truth is that you should submit articles to several directories. Remember, the more directories you submit to, the more readers you will have, and the more people reading your articles, the more visitors you can expect at your website.
Here are the top 5 article directories, determined by performance, in my opinion:
5. Outsourcing
Obviously if you’re a little strapped for cash then you’ll simply have to get by without outsourcing your article writing needs. However if you can afford it then it’s something you should seriously consider, simply because it can save you a vast amount of time. Also, the time you save can of course be better spent elsewhere.
Admittedly, article marketing can require a little bit of time in order to master it but in the end it will prove to be worthwhile. Bear in mind that if you make a point of creating two or three articles each day, you’ll have more or less 100 articles within a month, and when you can do that then it’s only a matter of time before you start seeing money come in.

Tom,
Salient points for sure. Our business would be no where as successful as it is without outsourcing because we would just not have enough time to devote to the various aspects of what must be done.
Along with good content on your blog and article marketing, we believe that the backlinks generated from outsourcing create the largest amount of search engine juice.
Good article, thanks.
Rich Hill
Thanks Rich for the insightful comment.
Speaking of business, if you want to take article marketing to the next level, you have to outsource most of the repetitive tasks such as writing articles and link building. If you’re not outsourcing, then you are considered as someone who is self-employed, not someone who is a business owner. There is a difference!
I agree Rich. Its a real time progress for everyone. Hope it was that way in the streets. It reminds me of Richard Carlson’s “Don’t sweat the small stuff”. He past by a man who was picking up the garbage. The man stared and said to him: I saw you doing it the other that. I thought i was a good idea.
I have been looking for a list of article directories that rates them by best performance.
Looks like you’ve found it! Thanks Steve for commenting.
I have been reading quite a few of your articles. I find them very informative and helpful. I’m just 3 mths into blogging and there’s still lots to learn. Thanks for all useful info.
Mary, I see that you forgot to add the “.com” at the end of your URL when you commented, but I corrected that and now it’s working.
Anyway, that’s great that you’ve been blogging for about 3 months now. I visited your site and it looks really good! Your food dishes looks delicious and you have a good amount of visitor feedback so far.
Keep up the good work and NEVER give up!
Nice tips. I think that article marketing is definitely a bread and butter staple to online marketing. I would add an even stronger emphasis on doing KW research before writing your articles and targeting Long Tail KW that answer questions. For example. “How To make/do” “Tips for making/Doing” etc.
Thanks. I’m glad you mentioned about KW (keyword) research and the importance of targeting long-tail keywords when writing articles. Not only is it necessary for article marketing, it is also good for SEO (search engine optimization).
You can learn more about the benefits of using long-tail keywords in this blog post here.
Great points on article marketing! I read an interview not too long ago that talked about the #1 diet affiliate program on clickbank and the most successful affiliate marketers promoting it. The vast majority made some meager amount of money, but nearly all affiliate earnings in a calendar year ($12 million) were paid out to less than 2% of the affiliates. All had done article marketing to some degree for promotion.
The difference between the 2% and the 98%? 98% of affiliates had submitted 50 or less articles in a calendar year, 2% of affiliate had submitted 500 (or more). Do you want to be in that 2%? Submit 500 or more…
Thanks JT for sharing a great example of what article marketing can do for you in terms of generating a huge income.
That’s right, it takes a small percentage of article marketers to dominate the majority of the Clickbank marketplace. These affiliates are business owners and are going after the long-term income.
The ones that are making a huge killing in profits are the business owners. In other words, they are outsourcing the majority of the work, such as article writing and link building.
This is a splendid blog, Tom. I’m adding it to my writing site ‘A Blogger’s Books’ as a valuable resource for online writers. I only include the best.
Thank you Anne for linking to my Internet marketing blog. I’m really glad you found useful and informative articles from this blog. I hope your visitors will find something interesting from this blog as well.
Hi Tom, it’s interesting what you say about about submitting articles to multiple directories as I have heard the contrary based on duplicate content issues. I shall test out your theory after reading this post though!
Anyone know of any good places to outsource article writing?
Hi Jeff, there’s a huge misconception about duplicate content in regards to article marketing. Some people think that if you submit the same article to hundreds of article directories, this will result in penalties from Google. This is simply not true. The only time duplicate content becomes a problem is when you have the same exact article on different pages within the SAME domain! In other words, when Google finds the same two pages of duplicated content within the same domain, one will be indexed and the other ignored.
To outsource your article writing, you should definitely try Elance.com, GetAFreelancer.com, or NeedAnArticle.com.
Hope that helps! Cheers!
Hey Tom! Great post you have there. You surely covered every aspects to succeed with article marketing.
I agree, Tom and if duplicate content on other sites resulted in being penalized naughty people would be going around posting duplicate content with links to their websites so penalize their competitors!
I agree with John’s comment there. Applying that logic when thinking if something could harm my site often helps me with certain link building decisions. I think most techniques won’t hurt you but some will help more than others.
Hi
Good content and optimized friendly web site is the most important things people must do and if you are a good article writer you can get traffic.
Good points. There is a lot of work involved though! I’ve just added a blog onto our site (I’m new to the whole process of blogging) and I guess the key is to have interesting, relevant content (which we’re a little short at at the moment, I’ll have to keep nagging my colleagues!) – it’s going to take time but with tips like yours above I’m looking forward to the challenge, thanks!
I’ve just started with article marketing; thanks, Tom for the Top 5 List of article directories and thanks for clearing up the duplicate content issue (in your comments). I was a little worried about that but your explanation makes perfect sense.
Thanks for providing such a good post on article marketing! Maintaining quality in the articles is really a good way to let the editors publish your article on their site.
I still think that list style articles (IE: Top 5, Top 7, Best 10 ways to xxxx) are the best ways to get people to your site…
These are simple to read and generally have the key information people are looking for.
