While I understand that some people think everything has already been done in Internet marketing, I think this is just a huge misconception. Although Internet marketing has changed dramatically, and the number of competitors have increased, Internet marketing is still considered a viable source of income for hundreds of thousands of entrepreneurs around the world. Internet marketing still has plenty of room to grow, and more and more companies are jumping onto the Internet marketing bandwagon everyday. For the vast majority of people, the Internet serves one of two purposes. It either provides them with information, or it provides entertainment. Admittedly, everyone has their own reasons for going online but if we generalize, practically all of those reasons would fall into one of the two categories mentioned above, unless of course, they’re going online in order to make money. These are the people known as Internet marketers who market products or services online in order to reap the many benefits it has to offer.

1. Earn Extra Income

Let’s face it, everyone likes to have some extra cash and Internet marketing certainly makes it possible. In fact, while some people simply aim to make enough money to pay a few bills or to pay for a holiday, some full-time Internet marketers make huge amounts of money.

2. Work from Home

Yes, with Internet marketing you can work wherever you choose, even from the comfort of your own home. Imagine never having to leave home every morning at a set time, or never having to get dressed up for work each day. Instead, you get to set your own working hours and your own off days and of course, for maximum comfort, you can dress as you please.

3. Quit Your 9 to 5 Job

Yes, you have read correctly. Internet marketing makes it possible to become self-employed. This is in fact one of the main reasons why many marketers get involved in marketing in the first place. They have chosen to break away from being a wage slave.

4. Be the Boss

Admittedly, there are many people out there who actually need to work for someone. For the most part, these are people who prefer it when others look over them, and when there’s someone around to give them directions or set deadlines.

However, there are just as many of us who don’t like having to answer to anyone, particularly if the person we have to answer to knows less than us in the first place. Having the chance to be my own boss is probably the single biggest reason for me getting involved in Internet marketing and I’ve never looked back. I am free to do what I want and I’m free to do it the way I want as well.

5. Doing What You Enjoy

Last but not least, is the fact that you get to choose what you want to do. With such an immense variety of niches to choose from, you’ll never have a reason to get bored with your job again. Waking up each day knowing that you get to spend the day doing what you want to do, while at the same time getting paid for it is a fantastic feeling.

Irrespective of whether you simply want to earn a little extra cash on the side, or whether you’d like to give up your job and start marketing full-time, the Internet can allow you to make your dream come true. Considering that you can become your own boss, you can work from home, you can do whatever you want, and you can earn money, makes Internet marketing a very attractive option.

Yes, I receive the same rubbish everyday as well but luckily my spam filter takes care of it.

Unfortunately, not all Internet marketers are real marketers, marketing real products or real services. Instead, there are many who prey on the average person in the hope that they’ll get their credit card out, irrespective of what dirty tricks it takes. Trust me, in 99.9% of cases, the result is always the same. The dirty marketer has taken your money and you’ve been left with some worthless nonsense that will serve no purpose other than clutter up your hard drive.

Of course this is not to say there aren’t any honest Internet marketers out there, because there are, and many of them are earning an astronomical amount of money. And, in case you’re wandering, I am not only referring to the Internet gurus and shady scam artists. What I find to be most unfortunate though, is that while online success is certainly possible, approximately 90% of people fail. Of course, while this can be due to a number of reasons, let’s take a look at some of the most common ones.

Becoming Overwhelmed with Information

It’s not without reason that people refer to the Internet as being the Information Super Highway. After all, you can ask any question imaginable and within the space of a few seconds you’ll be flooded with relevant information. While this is fantastic for some, it can spell certain death for people just starting out with Internet marketing because there’s simply too much information available. In fact, if Internet marketing was also a highway, it would have hundreds of lanes running in all directions and unless you were there in the days when it was still being constructed, you’d have little chance of finding your way around. Internet marketers all have their own recipe for success so while some rely on article marketing, others prefer blogging, affiliate marketing, MySpace, Facebook, Squidoo or Twitter, to name just a few. The unfortunate truth is, an information overload can and often does result in failure.

Fail to Remain Focused

Generally speaking, this often happens when you become overwhelmed with too much information so really, the two go hand in hand. Many new marketers simply cannot help themselves from becoming distracted and as a result, they find themselves jumping from one thing to the next rather than staying focused on one thing at a time. This inevitably ends up causing frustration, followed by failure soon after. The only way to avoid this is by focusing on one single technique. Being a “Jack of all trades but a master of none” is not going to make you successful with Internet marketing. Instead, aim to master one thing at a time before moving on to the next.

Failing to Take Action

Here again, failing to take action can also often be linked to the two reasons mentioned above. New Internet marketers in particular often fall victim to this when they try to focus on too many things at once. As I’ve mentioned already, too much information causes lack of focus and lack of focus causes frustration. For many, the easiest way out is simply to do nothing at all. Spending all your time searching for the magic solution, or that next big thing, won’t get you anywhere. Instead, you’ll simply end up wasting not only your own time, but in all likelihood, your money as well.

Please don’t misunderstand me because I’m certainly not trying to put anyone off from getting involved in Internet marketing. To the contrary, I strongly recommend that you do get involved but for your own sake, you need to make sure you have a system in place. Once again, the single most important bit of advice I can give, is that you dedicate all your efforts towards one thing at a time. Only once you reach the stage where you’re confident that you’ve mastered a certain technique, should you consider moving on to the next.

Now, when I say don’t expect the impossible, I mean impossible, and not something like four or five thousand dollars which is in fact well within your reach within about six months.  What’s more, I’m not referring to so called gurus either. Instead, I’m talking about the average person who is willing to put in the required amount of effort, and who is armed with some good tools.

To a certain extent, I could end this article now because providing you don’t see the Internet as a free meal, you’ll already be minimizing the chances of getting scammed. However, I feel it’s only right for me to go on a little further to highlight some other murky areas you will inevitably stumble upon.

1. Don’t ever allow yourself to be fooled by the beauty of a website’s graphics. In other words, exercise extreme caution before joining such a site and certainly before ever paying for any dubious program. Have you ever wandered why all those sites throw so many catchy phrases at you, such as, how to make a million in a month? I’ll tell you why, because that’s all they have to give you.

2. If you do decide to look into money making programs, then your safest bet is to look in the text orientated sites. These sites will more often than not shed a wealth of information on any programs being offered and of course, as you can well imagine, it’s far harder to try and scam someone when they have access to accurate information. Additionally, it’s always a good idea to read through the sites content thoroughly including tutorials, testimonials, and even previews if they’re available.

Following step 2 will put you in a position where you’re better able to judge a product or service before committing. Let’s face it, if a site has no testimonials and they cannot even provide you with good solid information regarding their business, the chances are that anyone who deals with them is likely to become yet another scam statistic.

3. Take it from me, any programs offering anything other than learning or building systems, are nothing more than scams. What I’m saying here is, unless the program is about learning or building your business, you should avoid it like the plague.

4. Money Back Guarantees. Yes that’s right. You should simply never pay for any program which doesn’t come with a full money back guarantee. You never know when a product turns out to be garbage, particularly when the sales letter is over hyped.

Follow these four tips and the next time you purchase a money making product on the Internet, you’ll be glad that you’re able to make an informed decision. But more importantly, you’ll be one step closer to building your own successful online business.
