Just a friendly reminder, I’ve added and activated the DoFollow plugin from Semiologic to my blog so that all my readers who comment will get some backlink love. From this point on, you’ll see this graphic at the bottom of every single post, reminding you that the link to your website in your comments will be counted by search engines. This is part of your link building efforts and will help improve your rankings in the search engines. SPAM comments will automatically be filtered and deleted by Akismet plugin – everyone else is welcome.
What is NoFollow?
The NoFollow attribute (rel=”nofollow”) is an HTML attribute that tells the search engines to bypass your links during indexing. Most blogs are installed with the default setting NoFollow, meaning that the URL in the comments are not followed by Google and other search engines. Unfortunately, it also means that legitimate commenters get penalized, since a NoFollow link is implicitly treated by the search engines as a vote against the page being linked to. However, I do not believe in punishing legitimate commenters, and by installing the DoFollow plugin, it allows Google and other search engines to follow and pass on the credit to the outbound link. This is my way of saying thanks to all my great commenters.
What is DoFollow?
While NoFollow is an HTML attribute, DoFollow is actually an Internet slang term given to web pages or sites that are not utilizing NoFollow. In other words, blogs that remove or turn off the NoFollow attribute are rewarding the commenters for their contribution to a useful discussion. So if you want to increase your backlinks and improve your Google pagerank (PR), join in on the conversations and give us your thoughts and feedback.
Now that you know what DoFollow is and what it can do for you in terms of link building – go ahead and place your comments and don’t forget to include your website
…or if you have any questions about NoFollow and DoFollow, just let me know and I’ll try to answer it.

It’s great what you did! You might also try with commentluv and keywordluv for further rewarding your visitors and their commenting. Later on, you might want to implement the “2+ comments for luv” feature, which basically means that only those visitors with 2 or more approved comments will get a dofollow link back, or a commentluv or keywordluv dofollow link.
I hope this helps
Cheers!
Thanks for the great tips. I’ll definitely have a look into that and see if that is something I can implement in the near future.
Sorry for posting again, I guess you have comment moderation enabled. I think you should notify your visitors about comments being moderated, so that they would know what happened with their comments.
At first, I thought my browser freaked out, but then I figured out it must be comment moderation.
Another tip, just to add value to this comment – use google alerts, that way you’ll be up to date with all the new content being published
Cheers!
Thanks for informing me about the comment moderation. I’ve updated the post to let me readers know about that feature.
I usually go over the comments and approve them the same day, so this shouldn’t be a problem for legitimate commenters.
Nice to stumble into this site.
Thanks for sharing
Best Regards from Turkey!
Glad to have another dofollow blog to visit!:-
Your blog is already doing so well so this would be more of a “thank you” to your readers, I guess.
Yes, you’re right! It’s my way of showing appreciation to visitors who take their time to comment on my blog.
I just came across your blog for the first time. Very good. And the DoFollow plugin is neat – I’m going to check it out. Thanks!
Well, I too am in favor of do follow moment, as I cannot understand why many of them keep the blog as a no follow when there is no reason to keep the blog as no follow except to stop spam which can be done by many other means.
Yeah, I see that the dofollow plugins are getting increasingly popular, although it is hard to control spam I suppose. It does however encourage people to join a community and become a regular commenter.
Actually, it’s not that difficult to control the spam. I use three different Wordpress plugins to help me manage this problem. The first one is the popular Akismet which counters the majority of the spam. The second one is ProtectWebForm which requires real commenters to input a code. And last, but not least, I use WP-Ban to get rid of those repeat comment spammers by banning their IP addresses.
Now I seldom see any spam in which I have to manually delete.
I have read many blog and i always see this “U COMMENT AND I FOLLOW” but every time i check their page source. I always found external no follow. In your case, your blog is really a do follow. Great!
It is nice to see one more in the do follow movement, as I can’t understand why many of them still stick to no follow when there is no reason to do so except to stop spam which can be done by many other means. Do follow not only spreads link juice but also it encourages the commentators to comment on the blog.
I love the do follow and have converted all my site now to do follow. Thanks for the link juice.
You’re welcome and congrats for jumping on the do-follow bandwagon! You’ve made the right choice, when you switched to do-follow.
The dofollow plugin is great, since i installed it on my blog my user comments have increased. its kind of an incentive we give our readers.
Hi,
I recently used the keywordluv plug in for the blog commenting.
This gives better results now. These plug ins are wonderful.
Thanks.
Great information! I use comment love which not only links back to a persons blog, but it will also show the title of their last blog post along with a link to that post. Good to see everyone working together to help each other out!
Chris Jensen
wow….this is the first time i came across your blog…and i found it wonderful…thanks…you did dofollow
Hello Tom,
Well done! I will be implementing alot of your strategies and techniques in the coming months.
Thanks for this gesture -
Unfortunately, I use blogger and don’t think there’s a way of removing the nofollow attribute that comes with it by default.
Nice blog BTW
I didn’t notice a response to this. If you have one and time to share, please do so.
I agree this is very informative.
New here. I am glad that you decided to make your blog do follow because it will help us a lot and in return you will receive real online visitor.
Hi Tom,
Dofollow is good but unfortunately as Google continues to refine their algorithm to discount spammy links and moves toward semantic search, and considering that most blogs have a low pagerank, I don’t foresee the benefit of do follow links continuing much longer. I also think this will contribute to Google losing relevance as eventually the only search results you will get are for mega conglomerate organizations that have been around forever.
Regards,
Jessica
Hi Jessica, thank you for your opinion about dofollow links, however, I respectfully disagree with your points as I think that everyone should be building links via dofollow and nofollow websites/blogs. It is important to maintain a balanced ration though; it should not be lopsided. More info from this article.
And as far as search results is concerned, keyword optimization is the key to get on the first page of SERPs. It doesn’t matter if your blog is new or has a low pagerank, as long as your blog or website has quality content and is optimized for long-tail keywords, you’ll likely get get a good position from the SERPs.
Tom,
Now I know what nofollow means!! Your blog is the best. I wasn’t sure before but I also didn’t realize how important it is. I will be tweeting this post. Thanks again.
I have not had good luck with commentluv; are you sure it’s not “spammy?” Any thoughts?
Thanks Tom for the DoFollow and NoFollow explanations. I did a Google search and your blog was top position so I had to visit to get a better understanding. Kudos!
I seem to find lots of helpful goodies in your blog – definitely subscribing to your RSS feed!
Been looking for this particular plugin.
Much thanks – keep up the good work!
Internet is a phenomenon changing everyday towards perfection and growth. So saturation of Internet marketing can never happen – of course changes of strategies and tools will always be there. We are going to see the world commerce shrinking into a square that is our computer screen (God forbid somebody invents a round screen).
Thanks for telling us about Do Follow and No Follow attribute
Thanks……..Blog commenting is really a good Idea to increase backlinks
Thanks for the great tips. I’ll definitely have a look into that and see if that is something I can implement in the near future.
I am so greatful for your easy to understand and extremely useful advice. there is alot on information out there but not much of it makes sense to the average person like me
